Students of Hermoupolis explore the city’s refugee heritage through research and artistic creation

Open Call

Participation Deadline
21 October 2026

Akropoditi Dance and Performing Arts Centre, in collaboration with Syros Centre for Environmental Education and Sustainability (KEPEA Syros), invite secondary school students from across the island to join a dance-theatre group that will operate during the academic year 2026-2027. The aim is to present a multi-part performance in Hermoupolis exploring the waves of refugees who arrived in the city throughout its 200-year history and played a significant role in shaping its identity.

In the first stage, the group will explore the history of Hermoupolis and its refugee movements. Participants will visit archives as well as public and private spaces connected to this history, develop a specific research route through the city, and collect stories, images and testimonies that will serve as the raw material for artistic creation. The group will then move on to the planning, preparation and production of a dance-theatre performance, to be presented at the end of the academic year (May–June 2027).

No previous experience in movement or dance is required.

The student dance-theatre group will operate as part of the project entitled “Students of Hermoupolis explore the city’s refugee heritage through research and artistic creation”, which is funded by Cycladic Identity, an initiative of the Museum of Cycladic Art. The project is implemented by AKROPODITI, in collaboration with the Syros Centre for Environmental Education and Sustainability (KEPEA).
