The Magical Other – Milena Ugren Koulas 1024 1024 akropoditi13

The Magical Other – Milena Ugren Koulas

Cyprus

The Magical Other is a little choreographic work that belongs to my ongoing bigger research about how trauma affects people and how traumatic experiences shape the way we think, move, communicate, and relate to others. In this piece together with dancers, we explored how unhealed trauma creates magnetic, destructive, and awkward communication between people. “The Magical Other” is about the desperate search for each other to mend the trauma.

AFRICA – ocram dance movement 1024 1024 akropoditi13

AFRICA – ocram dance movement

Italy

AFRICA was born from the need the choreographer Claudio Scalia felt to express his opinion about human- nature relation, through a verypersonal choreographic language. The planet we live on is slowly changing, and little by little, dying, choking by emissions of carbon and greenhouse gases, overwhelmed by consumption of not renewable resources and by the temperatures of the air always higher and higher.
Our seas are full of plastic islands and this fact represents one of the main threats for our marine ecosystems and it is a growing risk for the biodiversity, for the environment and our health.
AFRICA expresses the choreographer’s desire to make new generations sensitive to the ecology and all this for better common future.
Greta Thunberg’s words resound inside Scalia’s choreographic work:” You have stolen mu dreams and my childhood… You are
letting us down but young people begin to understand your betrayal, the eyes of all the future generations look at you, and if you choose to fail we will never forgive you… the world is waking up and the changes are coming, no matter you like it or not”.
AFRICA represents a last temptation to reflourish our planet that is living in agony and reminds us that the life of the universe is a perpetual circle to be respected.

Japan

This is an experiment to apply ancient Japanese theatre methods in search of radical contemporary performing art. Tearing off unnecessary decorations, it reveals the raw, naked, and rich reality of life with the presence of the sound and body with an extremely simplified setting, one violin and one body.
The musician does not rely on the melody but rather primordial energy of the sound itself, subtle variations of each texture of the sounds and the vitality of each stroke of the violin which create abstract and tactile sounds that vibrate the space and penetrate into the skin of the dancer and the audience.
The dancer does not rely on the storyline nor numerous flowing body lines of movements, but rather the presence of the body itself. The movement is extremely subtle as if each cell and nerve are dancing instead of muscles.
The perception of time and space is deconstructed. The movement of the dancer is the continuity of the discontinuous moments. As a result, it transforms our daily sense of space as well.
And ultimately the silence behind the sound, stillness behind the movement is going to be revealed, inviting audiences to the primordial ground from which all sounds and movements emerge.

We find each other in the Plenum – ANEMA Dance Company

Greece

We find each other in the plenum` is a duet. The full (plenum) is the opposite of the vacuum. We are talking about the plenum of each one of us. At that moment both are in the core of the plenum, which is nothing but the middle of the vacuum. Those moments when everyone, in an unremitting effort to gain independence, does not survive without the other. The important Other is the one that affects my thoughts, my feelings. She is the one who creates my reality. In an empty space, surrendered to its simplicity, everything is reflected. We commit ourselves and through contact, we research relationships under the surface. The relationships within us, which give a meaning to encouragement, support, trust. A complete and at the same time unrelated relationship. Difficult to balance.

Contemporary dance masterclass, from 4 elements – Claudio Scalia

Contemporary Dance Masterclass

My class is based on the development of communicative skills.
A new inner journey among senses and harmony through 4 elements. The language of the body can express any and every feeling, the body becomes the fire, water, air, earth. A technical and physical approach jam-packed with improvisation and set material.
These tools are designed to develop clarity of mind to connect with the body in a more sensitive way.
Be yourself and give yourself!

Flowing cycles – Youri De gussem

Contemporary Dance Workshop

Through the workshop, we will seek physically to go towards a self-transcendence and find ways to recycle, renew our energy beyond exhaustion while remaining in motion.
We will look for a better understand of our mechanics, the physical laws that govern our movements, in search of a field of richer possibilities in our dance and out of our comfort zones. We can then, through different exercises and improvisations, overcome our limits, our personal boundaries and bring our physical and bodily skills to another level.
I am interested in seeing how far the human body can go without physical damage. It will be a physical, dynamic, and emotional experience that will connect the body and the mind.
During the workshop, we will also take in consideration the environment we will be in. As the workshop is happening in a beautiful outside space, we will take the time to adapt our movement and physicalities to this rich place under the trees.
It will give us an inspiration to improve and transform our way of moving and connect with the roots of the earth.

Happy hour – Stella Zannou 1024 1024 akropoditi13

Happy hour – Stella Zannou

Contemporary Dance Workshop

Although technical elements are going to be found in this contemporary class, my basic aim is to make dancers aware of the weight and rhythm of movement, as well as to dance without fear and hesitation by using their physicality and full energy rather than sticking in the “academic” correctness of the movement.
Believing that each dancer should discover and develop his/her own way of moving, I will try to encourage personal expression and personal differences to exist by using simple improvisation exercises. These are then going to be applied in given phrases, transforming in this way a “set combination” into a quite unique personal movement material.
At the same time, this class will be a very strengthening training. Influences are found from different dance techniques as well as from martial arts. Floor work is also very important, since I find it is the base for understanding fundamental movement qualities.
Many acrobatics and handstands are found but without being the main goal of the class. The focus is on the safety of the body and flow of movement.
In general, this class is most often considered to be a very joyful and challenging class attracting dancers who love the physicality of dancing.

Shifting space – Fabian Wixe

Contemporary Dance Workshop

The class will be a practice based around Flying Low (David Zambrano’s technique), going in and out of the ground, passing through yourself and the others in the room. We will also explore flow in relation to the group, and how to carry and recycle the energy of the group in movement and stillness.
Throughout the work we will talk with our bodies, encouraging this communication in order to help ourselves resolve problems as, or preferably before they arise. Move with your whole body, including your problems, doubts and limits, always pushing towards the edges as we aim to go full with a body that is ready to respond with or without preparation, when and how you need it.
Finally, we will work with a given phrase and exercises specific to this work, adding to it each day, increasing the speed and the complexity of the body, while calming the mind in order to keep up.
Prepare to sweat, to keep working when you’re tired (smile to the pain), and to enjoy!!

Floating – Vittoria Franchina and Giovanni Leone

Italy

Our brain is loaded daily with 34 gigabytes of content, which is the equivalent to around 100,000 words.

One of the main characteristics of the digital era we live in is the fact that our senses are constantly stimulated; the Internet gives us simple, free and unlimited access to any information, making us always ask for more. We spend large amounts of time searching and collecting data that eventually we won’t be able to handle. This problem is known as “information overload” and it occurs when our attention is continually hampered and interrupted as we have to deal with an excessive quantity of facts; this may lead us to the impossibility of separating what is valuable from what is worthless.
The mind goes blank and disconnects from reality, it starts to flow freely as water through unknown times and places. It gets lost in a stream of words and images that manipulates our attention and inhibits our ability to think and feel.

Is it possible to bring our brain and life back under control? Or are we destined to be overwhelmed by this situation?
