Sound/Movement Workshop

The first 30 minutes will be a warm-up session focusing on the relationship between breathing, voice, and bodily movement. We will listen to the body, considering how it both affects and is affected by the space.During the following hour, I will introduce the improvisation method that I have been practicing, incorporating sound art in my performance. The focus will be on how to listen to the space and the body, and how to return to our primordial voice prior to – or beyond – our linguistic voice. We will respond to what we hear by using sound, including voice, body, and objects.During the last 30 minutes, the participants will make instant composition for improvised performance. We will have explored how to make performance based on our study of improvisation within the space during the previous hour.* The movement will be mainly floor work, which will be intense and rigorous, requiring flexibility and strength. We will roll, fall, and swim on the floor. Everybody is welcome, but please be prepared for strenuous physical activity.

    Movement Workshop

The first 30 minutes will be a warm-up session focusing on fluidity, elasticity, and movement isolation. It will mainly consist of directed improvisation following some given instructions to create a ‘neutral’ body.
During the following hour, I will introduce the improvisation method that I have been practicing, which is based on the East Asian idea of Wu (nothingness for non-intentional action). The focus will be on how to compose space by using movement, rather than on composing movement within space. The participants will be advised to pay attention to the direction of their gaze in order engage with the space.
During the final 30 minutes, the participants will make instant composition for improvised performance. We will explore how to make performance based on the previous hour’s study of improvisation and composing space.

The journey of lost things: a children’s workshop on loss 1024 691 dancecenter

The journey of lost things: a children’s workshop on loss

      Saturday 7 October, 17:30-20:30
      Free submission

The journey of lost things: a children’s workshop on loss

What do I lose? What have I lost? What will I lose? How do I find it? What does it mean to be alone? What does it mean not to be alone?

These are some of the questions we explore in this workshop.

Using movement and associative thinking as a tool, we invite children to explore together the notion of loss (of things, loved ones and time), through playfullnes and creativity.

We invite you to play, to dance, get inspired and to inspire (us). The workshop takes place in the context of the creation of a childrens’ dance performance, co-created by Ismeni Slijper, Aggeliki Sakellariou and Myrsini Tzavara, and serves as a source of inspiration for the creation of the performance that will be presented in schools, cultural centres and festivals during the year of 2024.

Working closely with our target group (children aged 8-12), we hope to gain a fuller understanding of the complex concept of loss through the perspective of a child.

The Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education uses gentle movement and directed attention to help people learn new and more effective ways of living the life they want. You can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. Since how you move is how you move through life, these improvements will often enhance your thinking, emotional regulation, and problem-solving capabilities.

The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics, and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. Moshe Feldenkrais said, “We move according to our perceived self-image.” By expanding your perception and increasing awareness, you will become more aware of your habits and tensions and develop new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity, the Feldenkrais Method assists you to live your life more fully, efficiently, and comfortably.

You can experience the Feldenkrais Method in two ways. Awareness Through Movement® lessons are taught in a group setting, with students following the verbal instructions of the teacher. Functional Integration® sessions are one on one lessons where the fully clothed student is guided through touch, movement and verbal instruction.

‘Theatre Laboratory’ is a course dedicated to the study of the “body that talks” and the “embodied speech”. The course / workshop consists of two parts:
          A. Basic principles of stage acting and improvisation.
          B. Concepts embodiment, basic principles of storytelling.
“The body that talks”: bearer of its own history, personal and collective. “Embodied speech”: speech that arises through the bodily function of improvisation.

How do sociopolitical conditions shape our relationship with our bodies? Which is the necessary “content” state needed for the scene? How does the private meet the collective? How do I turn the voices of the news and the media in my head into poetry?

We will seek to discover the body which converses, engages, listens, the body which surrenders, the revolted body, which contains our common breath, the meaning of words, the melody of meaning.
The main source of inspiration and research will be the collection of short stories by Dimitris Mitsotakis “O kairos allaze”.

The final goal is to create a presentation / performance that will take part at the end of the course / workshop.

          * The course is designed for adults. No previous acting experience is needed, but a desire to experiment, expose, communicate and play is absolutely necessary.

Anthoula Chairopoulou was born in Thessaloniki in 1988 and at a very young age started competing as a professional athlete in artistic gymnastics. ANIMAL MOVEMENT is a dynamic practice based on the primitive movements and imitations of animals which contributes to the improvement of strength, the development of endurance, dexterity, balance and agility. Thai yoga massage
What is a Thai yoga massage? Where does it come from? Who can practice it and in what cases? Questions that take hundreds of words to explain. But according to the experience of experts, the best way to answer them and perceive them, understand them is through the experiential way.
This is exactly what we will do in beautiful Syros, in four weekends. A seminar, based on the principles of Thai yoga massage. The qualities of acceptance, selflessness, empathy, and compassion. Intended to teach, or remind those with experience, a complete full body session in the supine, stern side position. By learning and practicing techniques that relieve and unblock accumulated tensions on a physical and energetic level.
The physiology and anatomy of the human body will become our navigator so that you understand as best as possible why we choose to use each technique. In addition, however, the lecturer, in and by his capacity as an osteopath, will introduce you to the marriage of these two therapeutic approaches which is the evolution of Thai massage nowadays.
The seminar is addressed to beginners or those who, seeing a friend, acquaintance, family member, want to touch or “squeeze” them, or to those with experience who want to refresh their knowledge. What is certain is that after this, touching your fellow human beings will never be the same.

              Vangelis Varis
Vangelis Varis was born in Athens, Greece, and for the last 22 years he has lived on the island of Evia. He was introduced to the oriental arts through Tai Chi and Yoga, after that it was easy to flow with the beauty of Thai Yoga massage.
At the Sunshine House he met his first, and very special teacher and mentor, (Krishna) Takis, who has been a strong influence since 2009. Many otherm amazing teachers came on his way and shaped his practice: David Lutt, Arno L’Hermitte, Rosemary Wallach, Felicity Joy, Gabriele Schüers, Pau Castellsague, Itzhak Helman. Always a student, yet with some of them, also an assistant and therapist in their courses since 2012 around Greece and abroad (Vienna, Zurich and more). Other techniques that have greatly influenced him are OsteoThai, Chi Nei Chang, Lomi-Lomi massage, but the craniosacral rhythm has been his greatest passion and talent.
Since 2016, deeply inspired by the scientific western approach of Osteopathy, he has begun a new journey at SICO (Swiss International College of Osteopathy), which has provided him with a unique touch in his treatments and has greatly influenced his teachings. Having successfully completed his five years of study, he has managed to combine all the therapeutic techniques, approaching holistically and uniquely each patient.
Today he maintains his own treatment center, teaches massage seminars in Greece and abroad as well as gives therapeutic sessions.

The aim of this seminar is to create an environment that favours self-discovery, tenderness, and care towards ourselves.

Through improvisational instructions, exercises, and movement phrases, we will work extensively on pauses, slow speed, isolation of body parts, and the detail of movement. The goal is to practice how we can value the simplicity of the moment and see where it can lead us.
